General information

1993. Peniche was not yet the surf destination it has become. The Baleal Surf Camp opened here that year, on an island connected to the mainland by a strip of sand, with an exclusive concession for 150 meters of beach reserved for water sports. It defines itself as Portugal's first surf camp. It probably is. More than ten thousand courses held over the years, FPS and ISA certifications, official recognition from the Portuguese tourism board. Levels are divided every time without exception: beginners never go in the water with advanced surfers. Packages combine lessons and accommodation in dormitories or private apartments with the beach within easy reach. There is also a bar on the sand. In winter, something unique happens. When Atlantic storms bring the world's largest waves to Nazaré, up to thirty meters, the camp organizes transfers to go and see them. Not to surf: to stand on the headland and understand what the ocean is capable of. An experience that doesn't need a board.
